An insemination catheter is used to deposit the cleansed sperm into the uterus. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is often the first and most cost-effective step in infertility treatment. By depositing cleansed sperm directly in the uterus, many factors possibly contributing to infertility are bypassed.
Inseminations are timed to occur around ovulation and are usually performed once each cycle. Before an insemination, the sperm must be cleansed and separated from the seminal fluid. Normally, the cervical mucus provides this cleansing function. Raw semen can cause cramping and possibly toxic shock if it reaches the uterus. As the non-gravid uterus can hold no more than 0.5cc, this is the volume of cleansed sperm usually inseminated. While trying to achieve pregnancy through intrauterine insemination (IUI), the choice of the insemination catheter is very important. It is why we, at Select Medical Systems, designed our catheters to maximize the outcome.
The dual opening of the Select IUI mirrors the normal orientation of the Fallopian tubes, while the wings of the Luer-lock hub indicate the position of the openings. With an effective length of 17cm, the Select IUI has an interior volume of 0.34cc and
an outside diameter of 2.1mm for the distal 4.5cm of length.
